The Hard Work of Rest

A thought on “Rest”

We are busy!! It doesn’t matter what stage of life we are in, we seem to all find reasons to be busy. As a society, we live with this anxiousness that there is always too much to do and not enough time to do it.

The reality is that this is the result of the cultural narrative that we live in and are shaped by. We are presented with the message that our value is proportionate to what we produce. That if I’m busy, I’m therefore important, I’m needed, I’m worthy. This lie tells us that if we work hard enough then we will be rewarded with a feeling of rest (that we so long for). This can look like a holiday, a night out, a weekend away or retirement.

Jesus offers an alternative. A better way. A way in which we can live from a place of rest; to find our Rest in the completion of Jesus’s work, not our own.

The word Sabbath literally means “to stop”. It’s a time in which we stop working, stop wanting, stop worrying, stop producing. An invitation to stop and enjoy God, living in the confidence we can rest because He is on the throne. This practice helps us find the type of rest that only Jesus can provide; Rest for our souls.
